If it is a bad NIC issue, it should stay with the NIC.I expect that there's some bugaboo in the system's config, and the issue will follow the hard drives. If it is an OS/configuration issue, the issue should follow the hard drives. But to find out if it is a line problem, might be worth it.)You could also take the drives from these macs and swap them. (Unless you count your traffic going at 100mbps as an impact. If that is the case with yours then I suggest trying a USB to Ethernet adaptor and plug it into the wired network. We saw this more often with wifi than LAN. I turn sleep off when connected to power.2. Check to make sure that the NIC is not set to sleep to save power. I presume all the other network functionality works without a problem? Have you tried changing the machine's name? (If necessary, unbind from the directory, rename the machine, change the NetBIOS name, etc?) Because it happens after a somewhat random period of time, I'm guessing that something in one of the network protocols that aids in name resolution is polling available devices on the network segment and there's a name collision.I've seen this before and I don't remember an exact consistent fix but I do remember several things we did between Macs and now we haven't had this issue in a while.1. To quote an Apple Genius bar conversation I heard once, "Do a fresh install".I assume you've booted and reset the PRAM, right? You also say it drops the SMB shares.
In windows the mapping stays and just "X's" the connection then reconnects when it sees the network again. Typically on Mac when they are disconnected they go away and don't come back unless you manually reconnect them or reboot if you have them set in login items. I find that this works like MS does when drives are disconnected. If they are bound to active directory then you should make them mobile accounts so they cache connections and such. I know what this does but it has fixed this issue for us on more than one occasion and the bandwidth cost is not really that bad at all.4. In the network setting in system preferences, select Ethernet or wireless in the left column, advanced, hardware tab, change to manual, half-duplex.
